WHAT IS KETO BUTTER COFFEE?

Perhaps one of the earliest ketogenic recipe inventions, bullet coffee is a delicious, frothy, hot coffee drink.

Thanks to butter. coconut oil, and a splash of heavy cream, this drink is full of delicious flavor and most importantly, fats.

Also called bulletproof coffee, this drink (or a variation) was the go-to drink by Bulletproof founder, Dave Asprey.

He got the idea for the drink while traveling in Tibet and was served a cup of yak butter tea. The drink made him feel better and gave him energy.

A few years later, butter (bulletproof) coffee was born.

CHOOSING A GOOD BUTTER

Since butter is one of the staple ingredients in this recipe, it’s very important to choose a good one.

Here is some info to help you choose a great butter to add to this recipe.

GRASS-FED LEADS THE WAY

Many recipes for clean eating call for the use of grass-fed butter.

Grass-fed butter has been described as a “nutritional powerhouse of vitamins A, D, and K-2.” Many also tout the benefits of the butter as it relates to the diet the cows who produce the milk for the butter eat.

Grass-fed cows eat a diet of (you guessed it) grass, meaning they aren’t ingesting extra ingredients in feed such as corn or other fillers.

This butter is a brighter, richer yellow, and has a delicious taste.

The most popular (or so it seems) option for grass-fed butter is Kerrygold, an Irish-import butter. You can find this butter at almost any grocery store or supermarket.

STORE-BRAND OR STICK BUTTER

The most obvious choice for butter is butter you are used to buying in stick form.

These work just fine, but are, of course, highly processed. If you’re using this type, you will probably want to opt for the unsalted variety.

MAKE YOUR OWN BUTTER

The last and most work intensive option is to make your own butter. While not hard, it does require some time on your part.

CHOOSING A GOOD COCONUT OIL

Before you can make a delicious, frothy butter coffee you need to have a good coconut oil on hand. Let’s take a look at what coconut oil is and how to choose the best brand.

WHAT IS COCONUT OIL?

Coconut oil is an edible oil extracted from the “meat” of mature coconuts harvested from the coconut palm. It is full of fat, making it a perfect ingredient for low-carb and ketogenic cooking.

Coconut oil can be used for a variety of things. In the beauty industry, it is often used for hair and skin care. Supposedly, you can even rub it on your scalp for faster hair growth.

Outside of an ingredient, it can also be used for removing the smell of garlic from your hands. Crazy!

IS IT FOOD-GRADE COCONUT OIL?

Obviously, when choosing a coconut oil for use in cooking, you’ll want it to be food-grade.

Food-grade oils are processed with much higher production standards. This means it will definitely be safe to eat in any recipe you choose.

Most stores separate their food-grade from non-food-grade oils by keeping the food-grade in the grocery section and the other in the beauty section.

IS THE COCONUT OIL SOLID OR LIQUID?

Even though it might seem a bit counterintuitive to have a non-liquid oil, stick to the solid. Pass on liquid forms you might find.

The solid form of coconut oil is generally more pure and can be easily melted into liquid.

It has a shelf life of around 2 years when kept out of direct sunlight and doesn’t need any form of refrigeration after opening.

IS IT REFINED OR UNREFINED?

For most cooking purposes, unrefined coconut oil is just fine.

The refining process is said to strip nutrients from the oil. Refined oil is best for high heat cooking (i.e: frying) as it has a higher smoke point than unrefined.

Anything that calls for coconut oil in a lower heat recipe, unrefined will be perfect.

Unrefined coconut oil might also be labeled as virgin, extra-virgin, or cold-pressed coconut oil.

IS IT LABELED AS ORGANIC?

This one can be a personal choice for you. If you prefer to source products labeled as organic, then certainly aim for that.

If you are ever purchasing refined oil, going organic might be a better option since certain chemicals aren’t allowed to be used to refine the oil in an organic-labeled product.

IS COCONUT OIL GLUTEN-FREE?

Yes, it is! When using coconut oil, there’s no need to worry about any gluten.

CAN I MAKE AND KEEP BUTTER COFFEE FOR LATER?

That answer to this is really is up to you.

Butter coffee is a recipe really best enjoyed fresh and hot. You could certainly make it and refrigerate it for later (heating it up, of course) but I really wouldn’t suggest it.

TOOLS USED TO MAKE KETO BUTTER COFFEE

  • Immersion Blender – Immersion blenders (often referred to as stick blenders) are fantastic tools to have in any kitchen. Unlike regular blenders, these are small and usually used to blend liquids. A few seconds of blending can save lots of work and create a delicious recipe! If you don’t have one, they take up little room in your cabinets. No time like the present to get one for your kitchen!
