WHAT IS VODKA AND SPRITE?

Vodka and sprite is an alcoholic beverage made from exactly what its name implies; vodka and sprite.

In this case, however, we are making the drink low-carb, meaning you will be using Sprite-Zero (or a similar diet soda) or Stevia-sweetened Zevia instead of regular Sprite.

This recipe contains a whopping 0g of carbohydrates, while the regular version would have a massive 34g of carbohydrates for the exact same number of fluid ounces.

LOW-CARB VODKA AND SPRITE INGREDIENTS

The ingredient list for this drink is incredibly short and simple. You’ll need:

HOW TO MAKE VODKA AND SPRITE

There are less steps in making this drink than there are ingredients. To make this, combine all ingredients together into a highball glass.

Sit back, sip and enjoy!

WHAT IS THE ALCOHOL CONTENT OF VODKA AND SPRITE?

Using the recipe as is, this drink contains 8% alcohol content for its 15 fluid ounces.

This is equal to two standard drinks (also known as drink equivalents) if you normally use things like that as a reference point.

MAKING THIS DRINK KETO-FRIENDLY

To make this drink keto-friendly, you’ll need to use a more keto-approved drink.

To clarify, depending on your personal keto beliefs, Sprite Zero is not keto-approved. It has lots of added ingredients and questionable artificial sweeteners.

In order to change this, you’ll want to use a product called Zevia. You may or may not be familiar with it and it (hopefully) is available in your local supermarket.

Zevia has quite a few less ingredients than traditional diet sodas. In fact, here are the ingredients found in Zevia: carbonated water, citric acid, natural flavors, stevia leaf extract.

If you can find me a “big name” diet soda that has an ingredient list that small, I’ll gladly give you a dollar for your efforts. However, I am confident you won’t be able to.

In order to properly substitute for Sprite, you’ll want to use Lemon Lime Twist Zevia. There are plenty of flavors to choose from, but that one will get you closest.

And, the good news is, it’s sweetened with keto-friendly Stevia extract. Win, win!

CAN I USE FLAVORED VODKA?

In short, no, you can’t. Anytime liquor is flavored, that means there are added ingredients and added carbohydrates.

Of course, when you’re aiming for a low-carb drink, any added sugars is a bad thing.

Distilled liquor has zero carbohydrates per ounce. Distilled liquor with flavoring can run anywhere from 2g of carbs to 11g or more. Some flavored vodkas even tout that they are low-carb or no-carb, but I’d be skeptical.

The easiest thing to remember is no flavoring, no carbs. If you use this when you’re buying your vodka, you’ll be just fine.

DO I HAVE TO USE A HIGHBALL GLASS?

Not in the least. Using a highball glass is just a suggestion but certainly not a requirement. Vodka and sprite is traditionally served in a highball or similar glass, thus the recommendation.

WHAT DOES HIGHBALL MEAN?

Highball is a name give to alcoholic drinks that are made with an alcoholic base, but has a larger amount of non-alcoholic liquid (also called a base).

In this case, the vodka is the alcoholic base and the Sprite is the non-alcoholic liquid (base).

Highball drinks are traditionally served over ice in a highball glass.

WHAT IS A HIGHBALL GLASS?

A highball glass is a glass that is traditionally used to serve highball drinks and other alcoholic beverages.

For reference, highball glasses are larger than lowball glasses, but slightly smaller than Collins glasses. If all that seems too complicated for you… We agree.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE IN KETO AND KETO-FRIENDLY?

There is often some confusion as to the difference in the term “keto” versus “keto-friendly.” While the two terms are often used interchangeably by those on keto, they actually mean two different things.

KETO DEFINITION

Used alone, keto (or ketogenic) references a food, recipe, or way of eating that is high in fat, has a moderate amount of protein, and a low (usually five or less) amount of carbs.

Common keto foods/ingredients are heavy cream, butter, avocado, and almond flour. These follow the high fat, low-carb equation mentioned above.

Generally, those eating a keto diet aim for 20g (sometimes 30g) of carbohydrates or less daily. However, they try to make 70% of their calories come from fat.

KETO-FRIENDLY DEFINITION

Keto-friendly, on the other hand, is a food or ingredient that is able to be consumed while on the keto diet. These foods/ingredients are very low in carbohydrates (3g or less) and generally have little to no fat or protein.

Some common keto-friendly products include Zevia, monk fruit sweetener, and unsweetened almond milk.

Just because an ingredient is keto-friendly, that doesn’t make it “truly keto.” It just means it is safe to eat because the carb count is low enough.
